The Root Chakra is Mūlādhāra in sanskrit, meaning “root support/foundation”. It is the first of our energy centers starting at the base of our spine. When in the womb it forms the basis and starting point for our physical development. The spinal column develops from the base or root chakra, up to the top (crown chakra).
This chakra rules our instinct for survival and the primal drive for fight, flight or freeze. It is also linked with the main senses of smell and taste.
The element associated with the root chakra is earth and the color is red. The organs ruled by Muladhara are the blood, spine, feet, bones and legs, adrenal glands, colon, kidneys and muscles.
The Root Chakra or Mūlādhāra represents stability, security, and our basic needs. It is that which grounds you and creates a foundation in your life. This includes food, water, shelter, safety, and emotional needs. When our basic needs are met we feel grounded and safe. It also supports our connection with the spiritual energies of our ancestors.
Root Chakra is how we connect to the physical world. We connect to Mother Earth through this chakra and experience her as an elemental force. Just as the Earth is the foundation for life, the Root Chakra is the foundation that all the other chakras build on.
Mastering the Root Chakra involves gaining an understanding and healing of our bodies, as well as our interaction with the physical world around us.
The HOME is also related to the Root Chakra, specifically the physical space that makes our home as well as the emotional sense of home. This also includes attention to the details of mundane reality and the routine of our daily lives. The Root Chakra deals with tribal consciousness and the understanding that one needs to belong in order to survive.
Root Chakra in Balance
The Root Chakra in balance helps us increase our sense of belonging, feeling secure in our actions and choices, the ability to hold an increased sense of self-worth.
Mentally we experience improved concentration, persistence, clear thinking, ability to set goals and to prioritize.
Emotionally we feel passion, love, excitement and determination.
When our Root Chakra is in balance we understand our connection to the Earth and have a sense of security and trust. Our energy flows more freely creating balanced emotions and a healthy body. We experience confidence in our right to have our basic needs met and a healthy sense of personal power as well as a positive attitude toward your own body.
Root Chakra Out of Balance
The Root Chakra out of balance is expressed as anxiety, worry, panic, depression, frustration, resentment, anger/rage, or having no interest in the world or in our own survival. We may also experience symptoms such as being threatened, chronically feel as if we don’t fit in or belong, and experience insecurity and low self-esteem.
All activities involving the earth are great ways to balance our Root Chakra, such as gardening and hiking.
